7:05pm: Call to Order    Evelyn Van Orden, President
    • 14 members were present.

Secretary's Report    Evelyn Van Orden
    • Evelyn announced that Karin Igoyan volunteered to be our new Secretary.
    • The minutes for the September 5 General Meeting were posted on the website, and a hardcopy was available for review at the meeting. They were approved.
    • The October 3 General Meeting was cancelled due to the Presidential Debate, so no minutes were posted.

Treasurer's Report    Evelyn Van Orden for Cindy Vogel, Treasurer
    • The balance in our treasury is $748.53 (includes $0.18 interest).
    • Jerri Thomson was reimbursed $18 and Evelyn Van Orden was reimbursed $25, both for expenses related to the August Ice Cream Social.
    • Evelyn's husband is no longer able to pay the $250 annual maintenance fee for the JCK website. Members voted at the September 5 meeting to reimburse him with funds to be raised by holding a Gift Basket Raffle at our December Holiday Party.

Hospitality Report    Sue Dietel, Hospitality
    • Sue Dietel reported that she and Pat Schnurbush brought the delicious treats.

    • Please contact Sue (susandietel@yahoo.com) if you wish to bring treats to a future meeting.

Philanthropy Report    Judy Gregory, VP Philanthropy
    • Marsha reported that Operation Gratitude’s final collection date is before our December meeting, so she collected hats and scarves at this meeting. If anyone still has items to donate, you can bring them to Marsha.
    • Judy announced another campaign for Afghans for Afghanistan. She will be collecting through mid-January. Bring items to the our meeting on January 2. Items needed are wool hats, scarves, mittens and socks for teens to adults.
    • Olga Martinez is collecting hats and scarves for her church to be given to the homeless. Olga needs them by Thursday before Christmas, and she will not be at our December meeting, so you can drop off your items at Needle in a Haystack, or give them to Judy at the December Holiday Party.
    • Sue Dietel will collect for Knots of Love. She is also collecting for Christ Child Society.
    • Sandra Ogden will deliver knit caps to the merchant marines.
    • Evelyn reported that Needle in a Haystack is asking for hats and scarves which will be sold for $5-$10 each. The proceeds will be sent to the Red Cross for victims of Hurricane Sandy.
    • Evelyn sent a letter to her student Nancy Ellyson thanking her for her generous donation of yarn and blankets.
    • Evelyn attended the Glendale American Association of University Women’s (AAUW) October meeting. Their Tech Trek group is sponsoring week-long summer immersion classes in math and computer science for students at Toll and Wilson Junior High schools. The group is asking for luxury scarves and cowls to be auctioned at their January breakfast meeting to raise money for these classes. Please bring your donations to the December Holiday Party.
    • Evelyn reported that there is a group collecting hats for St. Anna’s Hospital in Vienna, Austria, and that this is a cause that is near and dear to her heart.

Public Relations Report    Evelyn Van Orden, President
    • Evelyn reported that Judy Gregory and Maritza Sasaki (JCK member and owner of Itza Knitterie) joined her during her 3-minute presentation at the Glendale City Council Meeting on Tuesday, October 30. She spoke about our guild, announced our new meeting location, introduced Itza Knitterie as our new sponsor, and invited the public to join our guild. Judy and Maritza showed Olga’s afghan as an example of what we do. This meeting was televised on Charter Communications Channel 6 (GTV6). You can view the video at:

JCK’s presentation starts at 21:35 (21 minutes, 35 seconds into the video) and lasts for about 3 minutes.
    • Evelyn started submitting JCK's monthly meeting schedule to the Glendale News-Press for publication in the Calendar section.
    • The two main goals for these PR efforts are to inform the public about our charity work and to increase our membership.

Announcements
    • Evelyn is celebrating 10 years of teaching knit and crochet classes at Needle in a Haystack on Saturday, November 10. Her last class at the shop will be Saturday, November 24 from 10am-12noon. Stop by to say farewell and enjoy refreshments.
    • Evelyn reported that Itza Knitterie is a new sponsor of our guild. The shop is located at 1413 W. Kenneth Road in Glendale. Evelyn is encouraging JCK members to stop by and say hi. She will start teaching classes there in soon.

New Officers
    • Evelyn reported on some changes in roles and responsibilities. She suggested breaking out Membership from the Secretarial position. There are two email lists. The Bulk Email List (maintained by Evelyn) has about 100 addresses and is used to send out our monthly meeting announcements. The Active Members List (currently maintained by Secretary) is a subseet of the bulk list; has about 25 addresses; used by Secretary for emailing minutes and other info to Active Members.
    • Bonnie James had to resign as Program Coordinator. Sandra Canfield volunteered to fill the position. We need an alternate to fill in when needed. Marsha suggested another alternative could be to just get together to knit, talk, have a snack, as a social gathering, but still do the charities, and not even have programs or minutes.
    • These issues will be discussed at the January 2 General Meeting.

Member Survey    Judy Gregory, VP
    • Judy passed out a survey for the purpose of getting ideas of what we want as a group. We are in a transition phase. It is our group, and we can make changes. The survey is anonymous. We will discuss the results of the survey and plan how to proceed with our guild at the January 2 General Meeting.

10th Annual JCK Holiday Party    Sue Dietel, Hospitality & Judy Gregory, VP
    • Sue and Judy are planning our Holiday Party which will be December 5. There will be a Cookie Exchange instead of a Potluck. Cookies can be homemade or purchased. Judy will let us know how many cookies should be in a batch.
    • There will be a raffle of gift baskets like last year, and we will have a White Elephant gift exchange.
    • Bring hats for premies and babies in holiday colors. The hats will be distributed to Hospital NICU’s. Look for an email with details.
    • This year's raffle proceeds will cover our website's hosting fees for this year which are $250. Any additional funds raised will be added to our Treasury.
