Secretary's Report    Evelyn Van Orden for Eve Pereira, Secretary
    • Evelyn announced that Eve Pereira has resigned as Secretary, due to medical issues. We wish her the very best; we will miss her and hope she will be back soon. Marsha will write up and send out the minutes for this month.    
    • Evelyn suggested a re-structure of the position of Secretary to include a 2nd Secretary, or Co-Secretary, so that neither one would have to come to every meeting. The duties of membership list maintenance do not have to be included in the Secretary position. They could be done by a 3rd volunteer. She will send out an email regarding the position of Secretary.
    • Evelyn then reminded us of the need for minutes for JCK. The minutes are: an organized record of discussions, information for members who couldn't attend the meeting, information about guild activities for people considering joining our group, and an essential tool that helps her organize and manage the guild..
    • The minutes for the August 1 General Meeting were posted on the website, and a hardcopy was available for review at the meeting. They were approved.

Treasurer's Report    Evelyn Van Orden for Cindy Vogel, Treasurer
    • The balance in our treasury is $791.35 (includes $0.10 interest).

Hospitality Report    Sue Dietel, Hospitality
    • Sue Dietel announced that she brought the delicious sweets and Marie Benes brought the yummy munchies.

Philanthropy Report    Judy Gregory, VP Philanthropy
    • Judy reported that the July campaign for Afghans for Afghanistan was very successful and collected a huge number of items, including many from Judy. Judy will bring more wool in October so that we can use it to make more afghan squares. Maybe we can get together on a Saturday to put the squares together. 
    • Sue Dietel will collect and deliver our items for Christ Child Society.

Public Relations Report    Evelyn Van Orden, President
    • In September 2010, Evelyn's husband took a professional photo of our group with a mound of items that we had made and were giving to our various charities. It is shown on our website. Sue Dietel arranged to have the photo and an article written by Evelyn published in the Glendale News-Press, our local paper, in November 2010. Sue also arranged a wonderful exhibit of our items and information about the group in a display case in the La Canada Library, and Jerri Thomson did the same thing with an excellent display in the Eagle Rock Library. Evelyn would like to have us do this again, as it was very good public relations for our group and our charities and resulted in several new members.
    • Evelyn knows Frank Quintero, Mayor of Glendale, and wants to arrange a visit for herself and any other members to a Glendale City Council Meeting this month. The meetings begin at 6:00pm, and she will probably speak between 6:30 and 7:00. This will be very good PR for JCK, as well as Scholl Canyon Estates Retirement Community. She will send out an email regarding this.
    • The main goals for these PR efforts are to inform the public about our charity activities and increase our membership.

Programs Report    Evelyn Van Orden for Bonnie James, Programs
    • La Llama Farm Field Trip: Evelyn reminded us about the October 13 trip to La Llama Farm in Apple Valley. Those members who wish to go need to submit their checks for $50/person to Evelyn or Bonnie sometime this month. Checks should be made out to Nanci Sutton (owner of La Llama Farm). We will leave around 7am and return around 7pm. Carpools will be arranged at the October meeting. If there is time, we will visit a yarn shop near the farm. Fee of $50/person includes lunch, tour of farm, skein of yarn, and hands-on class for yarn-dyeing. For more info, please contact Bonnie (greenbabe17@yahoo.com).
    • TKGA Knit & Crochet Show: Sep 12-16, Reno. JCK is a member of TKGA, The Knitting Guild Associatiion. Members who join TKGA for $30/year receive quarterly issues of Cast-On Magazine, an excellent knitting magazine. TKGA also sponsors the Master Knitting Program. Several of our members are currently working on Level 1, and Judy has completed all 3 levels, an amazing feat!
    • L.A. County Fair: Currently running until September 30 at the Pomona Fairgrounds. Evelyn entered 4 of her original designs, and she now sends word that she won ribbons in all 4 categories. Congratulations, Evelyn!
    • Knitting Trivia Game: fun idea for future event, possibly in the Fall during a Saturday Charity Knit-Out.

Ravelry Report    Evelyn Van Orden for Eve Pereira, Ravelry Coordinator
    • Please join our Ravelry group Jewel City Knitters Group!
    • Eve Pereira will continue as Ravelry Coordinator, and Evelyn will assist. Both of them are currently moderators of the Jewel City Knitters Group on Ravelry. Right now Evelyn will give help to anyone wanting to know how to get started on Ravelry.

Announcements
    • It was mentioned that we haven't done any fundraising since 2006, and members seem happy with that. We have had a policy that we don't reimburse for member expenses unless it is voted on ahead of time. But Jerri has requested to be paid back for her expenses of $18 for the Ice Cream Social in August. The members who were going to help with the ice cream social weren't able to be there, so at the last minute Evelyn and Jerri brought the necessary items. Since there wasn't time to approve reimbursement ahead of time, a motion was passed to reimburse Jerri $18. It will take a major policy change to reimburse after the fact instead of before.
    • Evelyn reminded us that her husband Mark created and maintains our JCK website, and for years, he and Evelyn have been paying the $250 annual website hosting fee. She requested that JCK take on the payment of this fee now from our funds. Since nobody really wants to do fundraising, Judy suggested a repeat of the Basket Raffle that was very successful for our group at last year's Christmas Potluck. A motion was passed to raise the funds for the website with a Basket Raffle in December. We can display some of the baskets at Needle in a Haystack ahead of time and perhaps get some donations there, as well.
    • Marie Benes asked if we could put our Show and Share items on the big table so that all of us can look at them before they get donated. She never gets to see up close the beautiful things that members have made.
