   C. Treasurer's Report    Jerri Nicol, Treasurer
        1. Evelyn reported that the balance in our treasury is $908.73 (no change since last month).
    D. Announcements    Members
        1. Lee McIntyre told us that she visited our member Lynne Emery, who has had several surgeries and been ill on and off for many months. Lee reported that Lynne is doing better in recovery from her last surgery and will start chemotherapy after her recovery is more complete. Lynne, we miss you and are hoping you will be much better soon!
        2. Michelle Tang announced that there is a website called They are holding a crochet contest for amigurumi animals to be used in the site’s calendar:
        3. Evelyn received a request through the JCK website from a local person who is looking for someone who would knit two Christmas stockings for her grandsons, to be completed by 12/1/10. She will supply yarn and help choose a pattern. She will pay $175 per stocking. If you are interested, you should let Evelyn know and you can contact the woman directly: Diane Berger, 818-249-4415. After the meeting, an email was sent to the members regarding this.
    E. Philanthropy    Judy Gregory, VP Philanthropy
        1. Jerri Thomson reminded us that Knots of Love (KOL) is holding a relay to raise money. They are asking interested people to knit as many hats as they can during the month of September 15 to October 15 and solicit sponsors to pay so much for each hat knit (suggested amount $1.00 per hat donation). The sponsors could also just make a 1-time contribution. The hats and money will go to KOL, and the money will be used for mailing expenses. These hats should be 7” high, for medium heads, and 8”-10” high for large. The circumference should be 22”-24”. The lists of required yarns as well as patterns are listed on the KOL website: We can use whatever patterns we like but should stay away from anything lacy. They prefer hats done without seams, using circular needles. Jerri would like us to use a donation slip and put it and our item in a plastic baggie. She will continue to collect and periodically deliver our hats to KOL. For more information or questions, contact Jerri T: 818-790-8440 or
        2. Judy announced that her new pattern for the crocheted prayer shawl is now on the Kraemer website. She thanked Lili Horjea and Sue Dietel for test-knitting the pattern for her. Several of Judy’s other patterns are shown on the site, where she is listed by her married name, Judy Head. Kraemer has supported our guild and given us lots of yarn, and Judy said there are many lovely free patterns on this site. Her cute felted pink pig pattern is also there:
        4. After the meeting those who collect for the various charities took a count of what we brought:
Afghans for Afghanistan: Judy Gregory collected some socks and a sweater
Knots of Love: Jerri Tomson reported she delivered 39 hats
Christ Child Society: Betty Molinaro counted 29 blankets, 13 hats, 5 pairs of booties, 4 sweaters, 1 complete sweater set, 1 mommy hat, 1 purse, and 1 bunny
LA County NICU: Kimberly Smith and Mary Kaye Busalacchi delivered 15-20 blankets, 5 sweaters, and 12 hats
Operation Gratitude: Since the beginning of the year, we have made 31 scarves and 12 hats.
That is a total of +180 items! What an enormous amount of charity knitting we have done in 3+ months. Thank what it would be if we counted for the whole year! We will continue to donate to these same groups each month as members bring in items they have made. Thanks to all of you for your work and your generosity!
5. Some of the charities for which we collect donations regularly all year are:
            L.A. County
USC Medical Center Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): tiny sweaters, blankets, booties, hats
Christ Child Society: baby hats, booties, sweaters, blankets
Brothers Helpers: any items of clothing or blankets
Afghans for Afghanistan: wool sweaters and socks for kids and various-sized afghans
Knots of Love: chemo caps using specified yarn)
Operation Gratitude: scarves and hats for our troops – specified scarf lengths.
Betty Molinaro and Jerri Nicol collect items for Christ Child, and Jerri also collects things for Brother’s Helpers.
Kimberly Smith is a nurse at the NICU and takes our donations. Jerri Thomson collects for KOL. Marsha will continue to collect adult hats and scarves to be donated to the troops through Operation Gratitude. The deadline for these items is in early December. The website gives specifics on scarf lengths. They are looking for washable dark colors, usable for either men or women.

    F. Charity Challenge Project Photo Shoot    Evelyn and Mark Van Orden
. Members brought all our charity items collected this summer to be photographed.
        2. Evelyn’s husband, Mark Van Orden, came with his professional photography equipment and his patience and took photos of our group with a mound of donated items.
        3. These photos will appear on the website (see below) and hopefully in a local paper.
        4. Thank you so much, Mark! And thanks to Judy and Evelyn for organizing it.
