Kimberly Smith and Mary Kaye Busalacchi brought one of Kims twins to visit our meeting. We got to meet Lucie, who weighs about 7 pounds now. She and Jack came home from the hospital in June, and they are doing very well. Jack is still on oxygen, so he stayed home. They sleep about 4 hours at night, and they are both gaining weight. 2. Marsha reported speaking to one of Lynne Emerys friends, who said that the Pasadena Museum of History was one of Lynnes favorite places. She volunteered there once a week. It was moved, seconded, and passed to donate $100 in Lynnes memory to the Museum. Marsha will find out the information, and Evelyn will send a note and check from JCK. 3. In July the idea was mentioned to have members receive the meeting minutes sooner than on the website at the end of the month. Marsha will email to all active members a copy of the minutes a few days following each meeting, and Evelyn will post them on the website later in the month. 4. Janice Ogata and her friends have been working on hyperbolic crochet with plastic bags to help make designs for a group that exhibits all across the country, demonstrating the terrible situation of plastic in our oceans. This plastic never biodegrades and eventually settles to the ocean floor. They describe one area twice the size of Texas and 30 meters deep! The plastic kills the coral, which then affects the food chain. The exhibit is at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena from June 7August 21, 2011 . Janice and several members enthusiastically reported visiting the exhibit. 5. In the batch of yarn donated to us several months ago, Judy found a gold bracelet with a unique charm attached. Cathy Wacker took it back to the woman who donated her mothers yarn, and she was very grateful to have the memento back. What a kind thing for Judy and Cathy to do. 6. Sue Dietel brought nine boxes of books, needles, and yarn from Lynne Emerys stash that her family donated to JCK. We shared memories of Lynne as we also shared the yarn and her other things. Thanks to Sue for transporting all the yarn. 7. Several members said that the La Canada Jo-Anns has been remodeled and is much better now, with lots of yarn . E. Philanthropy Report Judy Gregory, VP Philanthropy 1. Judy had no report to make this month. 2. Jerri Thomson took 24 chemo caps to Knots of Love this month. She offered us copies of her Beehive pattern, if we were interested. There is a new hat called Baker Street Beanie, and Jerri will have patterns available at the next meeting. The drive for caps for veterans continues through September. Knots of Love will have a booth at the Orange Co. Fair, for those that are interested. Jerri has offered to demonstrate the Beaded Bow Hat, which is shown at the website, at the September meeting. Her demonstration will only take a short time. Marsha will email out instructions on preparation for making the hat up to the point of the row of beaded bows. If you are interested, but didnt receive the email, please let Jerri or Marsha know. 3. Olga Martinez (818-352-3032 ) explained that her church, the First Covenant Church in Eagle Rock, feeds dinner to the homeless on Thursday nights. Each time they feed about 80 people, mostly men. She hopes to have a gift for each one at the holidays, and she requested that the church women make handmade scarves and hats as gifts. Not many women are participating, and she can't do this all herself. She asked if any of us would be willing to help by knitting/crocheting a hat or scarf. She needs them by the December JCK meeting. Please use acrylic or cotton yarn so the items can be washed, and use unisex colors. 4. Charities that we Help: a. Afghans for Afghanistan continues to need items for children aged 716, such as vests, hats, sweaters, socks, and blankets, and the items should be wool only. Afghans mainly needs socks and sweaters. Judy Gregory takes our donations and mails them off. We can also make wool afghan blocks of any size, using worsted weight wool yarn in a firm (not lacey) pattern. Judy prefers garter stitch. She collects them and then puts them together to make afghans. b. Christ Child Society takes baby things: blankets, hats, booties, sweaters. Betty Molinaro will collect them each month. This group makes layettes for needy mothers, and they like to include a handmade item. c. Jerri Thomson collects chemo caps for Knots of Love, an organization that sends the caps to cancer centers, now even in England . They have a website which lists the specific yarns they require us to use for the caps. d. Irene Rezaie takes 2 or 4-holed buttons to send to women in Africa . They make things to sell using these buttons, and it gives them a livelihood. e. Kimberly Smith works as a nurse at the L.A. County USC Medical Center NICU. She delivers our preemie things hats, booties, blankets, sweaters. The blankets can be small, to cover the isolettes. f. Marsha collects dark-colored hats and scarves all year for Operation Gratitude, a group that sends boxes to our troops in December. The limits to the scarf size and patterns are available at the website: operationgratitude.org. g.
