    B. Thanks for Treats    Cathy Wacker, Hospitality
        1. Cathy thanked Becky Goodman for the yummy treats.

   C. Treasurer's Report    Jerri Nicol, Treasurer
        1. Evelyn reported that the balance in our treasury is $908.73 (no change since last month).
    D. Announcements    Members
        1. Evelyn suggested that we take our snack/chat break in the middle, before Show and Share, so that those who need to leave early don’t miss the treats. It was moved, seconded, and passed that we have the break before Show and Share, instead of after.
        2. Marsha received an email from
Donna Hovartos, who hasn’t been able to come to our meetings for awhile. The stairs are just too hard for. She will come back when we can find another meeting site. Unfortunately she was involved in a car accident recently. She was not hurt, but her car was totaled, so she has to find another one. We are very sorry, Donna, and we miss you. Several others indicated problems with the stairs.
        3. Heather Martin brought pages for us that list different types and weights of yarn and their uses.
        4.
Deborah Kac showed us her version of the 5-Hour Sweater. This pattern can be found at: www.yarntootin.typepad.com/yarn_tootin/2009/08/five-hour-baby-sweater.html
        5. Evelyn said that her husband Mark supports our group extensively, by maintaining our website for free and paying the annual fee. Thank you so much, Mark and Evelyn! We really appreciate all your efforts!

    E. Philanthropy    Judy Gregory, VP Philanthropy
        1. In June, Judy proposed a knitting challenge to make things for our charities and collect and save them until September, at which time we will collect them all and take pictures for the website, newspapers, etc. If you have a connection to any local newspapers, or if you have room to store any of these donated items until September, please email Judy: judy@judykits.com. Mary Kaye or Marsha can store some.
        2. Judy brought more yarn for us to use for charity knitting. She reported that Afghans for
Afghanistan currently needs socks of various sizes. These need to be at least 75% wool.
        3.
Jerri Thomson reminded us that Knots of Love is holding a relay to raise money. They are asking interested people to knit as many hats as they can during the month of September 15 to October 15 and solicit sponsors to pay so much for each hat knit (suggested amount $1.00 per hat donation). The hats and money will go to KOL, and the money will be used for mailing expenses. These hats should be 7” high, for medium heads, and 8”-10” high for large. The circumference should be 22”-24”. The lists of required yarns as well as patterns are listed on the KOL website: www.knots-of-love.org. We can use whatever patterns we like but should stay away from anything lacy. They prefer hats done without seams, using circular needles. Jerri would like us to use a donation slip and put it and our item in a plastic baggie. She will continue to collect and periodically deliver our hats to KOL. For more information or questions, contact Jerri T: jqthomson@sbcglobal.net or 818-790-8440.
        4. Jerri T. also reported that, according to the KOL president, the favorite color in hats is black. Other favorites are purple, pink, and blue.
         5. Some of the charities for which we collect donations regularly all year are:
    L.A. County
USC Medical Center Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) (tiny sweaters, blankets, booties, hats)
Christ Child Society (baby hats, booties, sweaters, blankets)
Brothers Helpers (any items of clothing or blankets)
Afghans for Afghanistan (wool sweaters and socks for kids and various-sized afghans)
Knots of Love (chemo caps using specified yarn)
Operation Gratitude (scarves and hats for our troops – specified scarf lengths)
Betty Molinaro and Jerri Nicol collect items for Christ Child, and Jerri also collects things for Brother’s Helpers.
Kimberley is a nurse at the NICU and takes our donations. Jerri Thomson collects for KOL. Marsha will continue to collect adult hats and scarves to be donated to the troops through Operation Gratitude. The deadline for these items is in early December. The website gives specifics on scarf lengths. They are looking for washable dark colors, usable for either men or women.
