Cathy thanked Sue Dietel and Betty Molinaro for the yummy treats. C. Treasurer's Report J erri Nicol, Treasurer 1. Jerri reported that the balance in our treasury is $908.73 (no change since last month). D. Announcements Members
1. Evelyn and Jerri Thomson introduced Brenda Marshall, one of our founding members who has had other complications for the years since 2003 and is now returning. She found out that JCK is still in existence through a conversation with Jerri. 2 . Evelyn reported that Needle in a Haystack is closed on Monday and Tuesday, July 19th and 20th , for painting. This is the 37th year that the shop has been open! Jody has owned it for 10 years and worked there previous to that. 3 . Deborah Kac read a very funny letter that appeared on the website of That Yarn Shop (a nice place in Eagle Rock which was forced to close last year). The letter was from Elizabeth Cady Stanton to one of her knitter friends on the evils and unspeakable folly of women who knit. If you would like to read it again, plus the humorous reply from her friend, please contact Marsha, who will send you a copy: stoddard@pacbell.net 4 . Several members mentioned that Bevs Country Cottage has a world of patterns usable for charity knitting: http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/patterns.html 5 . Judy Gregory is a yarn rep for Kraemer Yarns. Their website contains many free patterns, including Judys patterns, which are listed under Judy Head: www.kraemeryarns.com E. Philanthropy Judy Gregory, VP Philanthropy 1. Last month Judy proposed a knitting challenge to make things for our charities and collect and save them until September, at which time we will collect them all and take pictures for the website, newspapers, etc. If you have a connection to any local newspapers, or if you have room to store any of these donated items until September, please let Judy know. judy@judykits.com . Mary Kaye Busalacchi or Marsha can store some. 2. Judy brought more yarn from 2 Sisters and Ewe yarn shop in San Diego for us to use for charity knitting. She suggested chemo caps from the Berroco Comfort (we can get 2 caps from 1 skein) and scarves from Berroco Comfort Bulky, which takes 1 1/2 skeins. The chemo caps can go to Knots of Love, and the scarves can go to Operation Gratitude. The scarves need to be 5-7 wide and 45 50 long. Mary Kaye had several hats made from the Bulky, which could also go to Operation Gratitude. 3. Jerri Thomson reported that Knots of Love really appreciates our donations. Christine Shively, the founder of KOL, sends thank you emails for the donations, in which she includes touching notes of appreciation from some of the recipients. Jerri delivered our hats to Itza Knitterie in Glendale , which is a collection point for KOL. The last group of hats went to a cancer center in Phoenix , AZ. In June, KOL collected and distributed 3,000 hats. With the coming summer heat, KOL would like more chemo caps made from cotton (but not Kitchen Cotton or Sugar n Cream, as these are too rough). These hats should be 7 high, for medium heads, and 8-10 high for large. The circumference should be 22-24. The lists of recommended yarns as well as patterns are listed on the KOL website: www.knots-of-love.org . We can use whatever patterns we like but should stay away from anything lacy. They prefer hats done without seams, using circular needles. Jerri would like us to use a donation slip and put it and our item in a plastic baggie. She will continue to collect and periodically deliver our hats to KOL. For more information or questions, contact Jerri: 818-790-8440 or jqthomson@sbcglobal.net. 4. Jerri Thomson also announced that KOL needs to do a yearly fund-raiser, to raise money for all the mailing expenses. They are asking interested people to knit as many hats as they can during the month of September and solicit sponsors to pay so much for each hat knit. The hats and money will go to KOL, and the money will be used for mailing expenses. Some members are reluctant to ask anyone for donations and would prefer just to make the hats. It was moved, seconded, and passed that JCK participate in this event, with those who wish collecting money for the hats that they knit and all of the hats going to KOL. Mary Kaye and Jerri will be in charge of that event. 5. Lili Horjea told us about her trips to the Cancer Center at Adventist Hospital , where she helps women knit things, some of which go to KOL. This group supports cancer patients and helps with haircuts, make-up advice, etc. These women are cancer survivors themselves. Heather and Jerri T. also volunteered to help. The group meets on Mondays from 11:00 2:00 . Anyone else interested in helping should contact Lili at 818-951-5909. 6. Some of our charities for which we collect donations regularly all year are: L.A. County USC Medical Center Childrens Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) (tiny sweaters, blankets, booties, hats); Christ Child Society (baby hats, booties, sweaters, blankets); Brothers Helpers (any items of clothing or blankets); Afghans for Afghanistan (wool sweaters and socks for kids and various-sized afghans); Knots of Love (chemo caps using specified yarn); Operation Gratitude (scarves and hats for our troops specified scarf lengths). 7. Betty and Jerri Nicol collect items for Christ Child, and Jerri collects things for Brothers Helpers. Kimberley is a nurse at the NICU and takes our donations. Jerri Thomson collects for KOL. Marsha will continue to collect adult hats and scarves to be donated to the troops through Operation Gratitude. The deadline for these items is in early December. The website gives specifics on scarf lengths. They are looking for washable dark colors, usable for either men or women. F. Show and Share Members 8:45pm: Meeting Adjourne
