1. Evelyn and all of us welcomed Janice Ogata back we have missed you, Janice! 2 . Evelyn reported that Needle in a Haystack is having a 30% off sale on everything (except needlework threads) for the month of June. This is the 37th year that the shop has been open! 3 . Janice Ogata is still knitting/crocheting bags with Target bags. She would appreciate having any that we have collected. Also, she took pictures from the 2009 Knit for the Cure at the Rose Bowl and put them in a photo album, which she brought to share with us. 4 . Kimberley Smith told us that the NICU currently has 25 babies, three of whom are triplets! She brought a bag of acrylic yarn for us to take. 5 . Marsha had an email from Dolores Bromberek , who has been missing from our group for several months. She is caring for her mother who has been very sick. We miss you, Dolores! 6 . Betty Molinaro received a letter from Teryl MacDougall who does programs for cancer patients at Glendale Adventist Hospital . They have a knitting class from 11:00 12:30 on Mondays. They need 1 volunteer per week who will go and help with those who are making caps for future cancer patients. Heather, Lili, and Jerri T. were interested in helping. If you are interested, the contact is: terylmacdougall@msn.com. 7 . Judy Gregory is a yarn rep for Kraemer Yarns. Their website contains many free patterns, including Judys patterns. kraemeryarns.com 8 . Betty showed us an easy version of long-tail cast on. With this method, no guesswork or measuring is involved. There is a demo video at: http://www.berroco.com/video/classic_castons.html . This new version is at the end of a longer video on several types of cast-on techniques. Another site that shows this method is: http://www.ehow.co.uk/video_4976531_advanced-knitting-long-tail-cast.html. E. Philanthropy Judy Gregory, VP Philanthropy 1. Judy said that Afghans for Afghans recently shipped another group of items for larger children. They collected 2730 items, including 800 pairs of socks! They still are asking for socks for large children or small adults. Judy continues to store up our donations in case Afghans make a request for items. If you plan to make wool things, they should be at least 75% wool, worsted weight. 2. Judy was given 20 lbs of yarn from 2 Sisters and Ewe yarn shop in San Diego . She brought some of the types for us to use for charity knitting. She showed us samples of a chemo cap made from Berroco Comfort (we can get 2 caps from 1 skein) and a scarf from Berroco Comfort Bulky, which takes 1 1/2 skeins. The chemo caps can go to Knots of Love, and the scarves can go to Operation Gratitude. The scarves need to be 5-7 wide and 45 50 long. 3. Judy proposed a knitting challenge to make things for our charities and collect and save them until September, at which time we will collect them all and take pictures for the website, newspapers, etc. If you have a connection to any local newspapers, or if you have room to store any of these donated items until September, please let Judy know: judy@judykits.com . Mary Kaye can store some. 4. Jerri Thomson reports that Knots of Love really appreciates our donations. She will deliver the 5 hats she collected this month plus 3 from last month. KOL has collected and distributed 50,000 hats since it started. With the coming summer heat, KOL would like more chemo caps made from cotton (but not Kitchen Cotton or Sugar n Cream, as these are too rough). These hats should be 7 high, for medium heads, and 8-10 high for large. The circumference should be 22-24. The lists of recommended yarns as well as patterns are listed on the KOL website: www.knots-of-love.org . We can use whatever patterns we like but should stay away from anything lacy. They prefer hats done without seams, using circular needles. Jerri would like us to use a donation slip and put it and our item in a plastic baggie. She will continue to collect and periodically deliver our hats to KOL. For more information or questions, contact Jerri T: 818-790-8440 or jqthomson@sbcglobal.net. 5. Jerri T. also went to El Sereno library and spoke there about knitting. The group there is making hats from Bernat Satin, which is very soft. There will be a workshop on Loom Knitting on June 12 from 11:30 1:30 . The library is located on Huntington Drive ion Pasadena . 6. Evelyn brought yarn donated by Carol Deutsch, a student of Evelyns. She would like it to be used only for charity items. 7. Some of our charities for which we collect donations regularly all year are: L.A. County USC Medical Center Childrens Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) (tiny sweaters, blankets, booties, hats); Christ Child Society (baby hats, booties, sweaters, blankets); Brothers Helpers (any items of clothing or blankets); Afghans for Afghanistan (wool sweaters and socks for kids and various-sized afghans); Knots of Love (chemo caps using specified yarn); Operation Gratitude (scarves and hats for our troops specified scarf lengths). 8. Marsha will continue to collect adult hats and scarves to be donated to Operation Gratitude. The deadline for these items is in early December. The website gives specifics on scarf lengths. They are looking for washable dark colors, usable for either men or women. For questions, contact Marsha: 818-249-4892 or stoddard@pacbell.net . Betty or Jerri N. collect items for Christ Child, and Jerri N. collects things for Brothers Helpers. Kimberley is a nurse at the NICU and takes our donations. F.
