7:05 pm: Meeting Called to Order    Evelyn Van Orden, President    15 members were present.
    A. Minutes    Marsha Stoddard
        1. Minutes of the May meeting were available at the meeting. It was moved, seconded, and passed to approve the minutes as written.
    B. Treasurer's Report
   
Jerri Nicol
        1. Evelyn sent a letter and a check for $100 to Stitches from the Heart, in memory of
Linda Derderian. The Stitches director, Kathy Silverton, sent a thank you note, adding that our money will be used to send over 500 items to needy babies.
        2. The balance is now $1053.81.
    C. Announcements
     Members
        1. Lynne reported that Vroman’s Book Store will be having a Knit-In sometime in July, to make hats for charities. They will have patterns available. More information will come later.
        2. Michelle said that Saturday, June 9, is World Wide Knit in Public Day.
        3. Evelyn announced that our July meeting falls on the 4th, so she has requested that
Sparr Heights Center allow us to meet the following week on July 11. She will notify us when she hears back.
        4.
Janice Ogata reminded us that the L.A. County Fair is coming in September. If we would like to submit knit or crochet items for the Fair’s contest, the entry form deadline is July 12. The delivery date for the items is July 24.
        5. Marsha thanked Donna Hovartos and
Diane Larsen for the treats and added that a new sign-up sheet is available for the months of July through December.
    D. Philanthropy   
Judy Gregory, VP Philanthropy
        1.
Judy reported that she was looking on the freecycle.com website (suggested by Michelle Tang) and found someone who was in need of yarn for her students’ and their knitting class. Judy also found someone who had a large stash of yarn from an estate that she wished to give away. Judy was able to match up these two people and bring about a happy ending for both parties!
        2.
Judy also requested that one of our members take over the collection and delivery of JCK knit/crochet donations to Stitches from the Heart, either by mailing them or by taking them to the Stitches Shop in Santa Monica. Lynne Emery and Donna Hovartos indicated that they would be willing to work on that.
        3.
Jerri announced that she delivered many of our items to Kathleen McCrimlist from the Christ Child Society. We donated a total of 11 pairs of booties, 7 sweaters, 12 blankets, 9 stuffed animals, and 50 hats. Kathleen was very grateful, since they recently ran out of handmade items to include in the layettes. Jerri also said that she has made nametags for those who donate their items for charities. Thank you for doing those for us.

Lynne Emery brought 50 more knit baby hats made by a friend of one of her friends.

    E. New Business

Jerri Nicol talked about the book of patterns that she and Betty Molinaro have put together. There is a master copy of each pattern in a plastic sleeve, to remain in the book. Behind each master is a sleeve with copies available to members and visitors to take. The patterns are to be used for making items for charity. Members have contributed these patterns, and more patterns can be donated. Special thanks to Jerri and Betty for all their work on this helpful book.
        2. Several of our members have been discussing possibilities for future educational programs for our meetings. Diane presented a list of those ideas plus a space to indicate more ideas.
Deborah Kac handed out the information she found on the TKGA website, which consisted of rental kits designed to teach new stitches or techniques; and a list of ideas of activities other than learning new techniques, such as field trips, yarn swaps/auctions, teaching a group of kids, group challenge to make hats, etc. Betty Molinaro gave us printouts from a different area of the TKGA website with other ideas. She also pointed out that ‘Cast On’ magazine has good ideas and lessons for teaching. Thanks to Diane, Deborah, and Betty for all their work. It was decided to have our first educational meeting in September, hoping that all our members will be back by then from vacations, etc. To further formalize these ideas into an action plan, a committee was formed, consisting of Judy Gregory, Deborah Kac, Diane Larsen, Lee McIntyre, Betty Molinaro, Jerri Nicol, Carol Parker, Marsha Stoddard. It was decided that the first meeting, in Sept, would be to begin a baby hat challenge. Cathy Wacker agreed to lead the session. She will bring a hat pattern for us all to try and tell us ahead of time what yarn to bring. It will be interesting to see how differently the hats turn out. She will show us her technique for finishing.
