Thanks for Treats Cathy Wacker, Hospitality 1. Cathy thanked Olga Martinez and Kathy Fogel for the yummy treats. C. Treasurer's Report J erri Nicol, Treasurer 1. Evelyn reported that the balance in our treasury is now $914.24, including interest accrued in recent years (about 11 cents per month). Our group never collects dues. D. Announcements Members
1. Judy Gregory and Evelyn reported on the recent TNNA industry trade show. Yarn distributors have booths where they display their new products. Yarn shops go around and place their orders for new yarns. Judy mentioned that on Friday there was a fashion show, showcasing a lot of glittery metallic yarns and bead work. Classes were offered. Judy is a yarn representative and carries 9 different lines of yarn. She went to each of those companys booths. At the end, the yarn companies laid out the yarn they brought, not wishing to ship it all back home with them, so Judy was able to collect a lot of free yarn for us to use for charity projects! 2 . Evelyn announced that February 14 is the 8th anniversary of the founding of JCK. We are very glad that Evelyn and Judy got together at Needle in a Haystack, became friends, and decided to start a new group! Thank you both! 3. We were warned to be careful in using Craigs List to buy items, as there is a lot of fraud on the site. 4 . Lili Horjea showed us a beautiful baby blanket she made and asked why the garter stitch edging around it causes it to be rippled and not straight. Evelyn explained that garter stitches are wider and shorter than stockinette stitches. Garter stitches are square versus rectangular stockinette. So if ones blanket is done in stockinette but the edging is garter stitch, then the blanket will pull. An alternative to use is seed stitch. 5 . Our new member, Mary Jamora, showed us a picture of the Einstein doll she is knitting for her son. She took the pattern from a book called Knitted Icons , by Carol Medrum. We looked at various dolls of well-known characters. It looks like a very fun book to have and use. 6 . Janice Ogata told us about the new project she is doing with some knitters at her work, using strips of plastic bags. She ties these strips together, rolls them up into a ball, and knits odd-shaped coral for a big coral reef to be used by a group touring around to raise awareness about ocean life and ecology. We can also use old VHS video tape. The deadline for this project is May, 2011. If we are interested in knitting or crocheting coral, we should contact Janice. E. Philanthropy Judy Gregory, VP Philanthropy 1. Judy announced that she will send another box to Afghans for Afghanistan around February 15. She continues to collect and send similar items every time they have a project. These items are for children aged 714, such as vests, hats, sweaters, socks, and blankets, and should be wool only. Thank you, Judy, for your dedication to this organization and for sending all our things. 2. While at TNNA, Judy met and spent time with Christine Shively, the founder and head of Knots of Love, the organization that collects and ships chemo caps to patients in hospitals in our local area. Judy was very impressed with Christines energy and enthusiasm. 3. Jerri Thomson collects our donations for Knots of Love, and this month she delivered 6 more caps donated by our group. The KOL website has a list of acceptable yarns and suggestions for hat patterns. KOL has sent over 70,000 hats in 3.5 years! What an accomplishment! Thank you all for your donations. If you want/need a receipt for tax purposes, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Christine Shively, and she will send a total back for you. Contact Jerri for the address. 4 . Heather Martin is re-knitting some of the Kraemer Yarn Company patterns. These patterns are listed on Kraemers website www.kraemeryarns.com , and there will be new pictures of Heathers items. F. La Caρ ada Library Display 1 . Sue Dietel has arranged a display of items made for our various charities in a case at the La Caρ ada Library for the month of February. This is similar to the display arranged by Jerri Thomson at the Eagle Rock Library in December. 2. She will return all display items to us at the March meeting. She brought a picture she took of the display for us to see. Thank you for all your efforts, Sue. G. Show and Share Members 8:45pm: Meeting Adjourne
