Crochet Coral The Institute for Figuring

Hi Everyone,
It took me a while to find the flyer for the Institute for Figuring but here is the info.
THE INSTITUTE FOR FIGURING
P.O. BOX 50346
LOS ANGELES, CA 90050
(323) 256-5641
EMAIL: Mail@theiff.org
www.theiff.org

If anyone wants to contribute crocheted coral, kelp, or any sea creatures you can mail your items to them. They are going to have a display at the L.A. County Fair this year & possibly at LACMA in 2007.

Here's a link to a page that shows two photos of Hyperbolic Crochet, the technique used to create the coral and kelp that Janice is talking about:

Below is one of the photos from that page showing Hyperbolic Crochet "coral"...

If you take a look at www.knitty.com there is a pattern for a Sea Nautilus. That would be fun to knit for this project. I'll see if I can find some time for personal knitting..... HA!

Re: Crochet Coral The Institute for Figuring

Dear Evelyn & Judy,
Thanks for posting a link to the Institute for Figuring. Also thank you for letting me know about the pattern for Sea Nautilus.

If you want to make a coral or something similar, all you have to do is start with a chain of 15, then you single crochet in the first 2 stitches, then you do 2 single crochets into the 3rd stitch and keep repeating the pattern until you get to the end. You can make the piece as large or as small as you want. It's just a matter of increasing (in crochet)

FYI ~ That Yarn Store will hold a free Hyperbolic Crochet Workshop on May 31 from 6-7pm: "David will let you know as much as you can stand about these curious mathematical forms, and will show you how to make your own. Did we mention the workshop is free?"
